The current temple structure dates back to the 12th–17th centuries, largely rebuilt during the rule of the Nayak dynasty after being destroyed by invaders in the 14th century. However, the legend of Meenakshi dates back even further to the Sangam era.
According to mythology, Meenakshi was born with three breasts — a prophecy stated that the third would disappear when she met her future husband. When she met Lord Shiva, it vanished, confirming her divine destiny.
There are 14 gopurams in the complex, each adorned with vivid sculptures of deities, animals, and demons.
The Southern Tower is the tallest, standing at 170 feet (52 m)
Gopurams are repainted every 12 years, keeping them colorful and vibrant
Despite its name, this hall has 985 exquisitely carved pillars. Each is unique and displays Dravidian sculpture at its finest.

Don’t miss the musical pillars that produce different notes when tapped
Located inside the temple, this sacred tank is where devotees bathe before entering the inner sanctum.
Surrounded by pillared corridors
Once used for literary debates during the Sangam period
Meenakshi Shrine is located on the southwest side
Sundareswarar Shrine (Shiva) is in the northeast
Entry to the sanctum is restricted to Hindus, but tourists can admire the architecture from outside
